Running A Successful Business

Running A Successful Business by Jane Thurnell-Read

From time to time I send out a hard copy newsletter to some of the UK practitioners and students. I sent one out recently and made some comments about running a successful practice. Because I've had such a lot of positive feedback about what I wrote (thank you!), I'm reprinting it below for those of you who didn't receive it.

I come from a family of people who work hard, so at least some of my energy is in the genes/family patterns, but I also believe that part of the reason I have so much energy is because I take good quality nutritional supplements and eat organic food wherever possible.

Here's what I wrote in the newsletter:

I know some of you struggle to be successful, not because your technical knowledge is poor, but because the correct business strategies aren't in place.

When I was a practitioner I had a very successful practice. There was a time when I was seeing 30-40 clients a week, and I had a 3-month waiting list to see me. Now I have a very successful business selling test kits and my books.

From time to time people ask me what is the secret of my success how do I manage to get what I want. I think there are several aspects to it.

Firstly, I'm not frightened of making decisions. Research shows that if you lack self-confidence, you are likely to make decisions slowly, if at all, so working to improve your self-confidence (e.g. with kinesiology and flower remedies) can be very worth-while. Secondly I (usually!) stay focussed on my goal, but am prepared to adapt the way I achieve it if my first strategy doesn't work. This doesn't mean I will do anything to achieve my goal, because integrity is a vital life-enhancing attribute, and should not be traded for any short-term achievement, but I am prepared to be flexible and try different approaches till I get what I want.

Thirdly when I felt nervous about promoting myself and kinesiology I used to concentrate on the people who needed to know about it, and the difference it could make to their lives. This made me feel I was being uncaring if I didn't do my best to promote it (and me). I found this motivated me to overcome my fears of rejection and ridicule.

I still have occasional moments of self-doubt and despair, so I haven't cracked it completely! I know though that if I stay focussed most of the time on what I want to achieve, and behave with flexibility and integrity, paying attention to others peoples needs, I do very often achieve what I want.
