Effective Weight Loss Tips
Healthy Weight Loss Tips by Jane Thurnell-Read
Here are 25 healthy weight loss tips you can use yourself or pass on to your clients:
1. Snacks
Keep healthy snacks at the front of the fridge or cupboard. Put unhealthy snacks at the back of the cupboard or fridge. Put them in plain dark containers.
2. Hunger
Hungry? Ask yourself: what am I really hungry for? It's often not food.
3. Watch Your Waist
A study by EPIC (the European Prospective Investigation of Cancer) has shown that women with a waist measurement of 34 inches (86 cms) or more almost double their risk of developing womb cancer. Another reason to stay fit and active.
4. Keep Failing?
Don’t despair if you've been struggling for years to lose weight - you now know lots of ways that don’t work. Think about the ways that you've tried – do they give you any clues about what might work?
5. Keep A Food Diary
Keeping a food diary can help you eat better. Often writing down everything you eat means you end up eating less.
6. Bowel Cancer
You're more likely to get bowel cancer if you are obese. Yet another good reason to eat a healthy well-balanced diet.
7. Eat Lite
Don't order a large portion in a restaurant and think it's OK because you've ordered a 'lite' drink or used a no-calorie sweetener.
8. Get A Pedometer
Most people take 3000-4000 steps a day. For the sake of your health (and your weight) you should be taking at least 10,000.
9. Alcohol
Just because alcohol doesn't contain chocolate drops, it doesn't mean it's not fattening. Alcohol stimulates the appetite and increases the flow of gastric juices, so you feel hungrier than you really are. So cut back on alcohol if you want to lose weight.
10. Osteoarthritis
Johns Hopkins School of Medicine researchers have found that men carrying a few extra pounds in early adulthood nearly double their chance of developing painful knee and hip osteoarthritis later in life.
11. Maximise Weight Loss
To lose weight and keep it off combine eating less with exercise.
12. Speed Up Your Metabolism
Eat 5-6 small meals a day preferably including some protein in each meal to perk up your metabolism.
13. Muscle Loss
If you lose muscle, your need for calories decreases. Do some weight training to tone your muscles and stay healthy. You don’t have to go to a gym if you don’t want to – you can use tins/cans as your weights and workout at home.
14. Eating At Home
Decide that you will only eat at one place in your home - preferably sitting at a table with no distractions - this will automatically reduce the amount you eat.
15. Dieting?
If you're on a diet, ask yourself: Is this a diet I could follow (with some small modifications) for the rest of my life? If not, change the diet.
16. Eating Habits
Work out when you are most likely to snack and if at all possible change your routine around that time.
17. Feeling Hungry?
When you feel hungry, drink some water and wait 10 minutes. You may be mistaking a thirst request for a food request.
18. Change Your Plate!
Use a smaller plate, so that your portion looks bigger and you eat less.
19. Life And Soul Of The Party?
If you eat to suppress your emotions and you're always the life and soul of the party but feel miserable inside, try the Bach flower remedy 'Agrimony'.
20. Affirmations
Try making an affirmation after a meal, e.g. "I am now full and do not need to eat again till -"
21. Mouthfuls
Put you fork down between mouthfuls. Put your sandwich back on your plate between mouthfuls. Thin people often do this automatically. The rest of us have to learn it.
22. Your Ideal Diet
The ideal diet for a person consists of the right food in the right amount at the right time in the right way. Are you eating your ideal diet?
23. Going Food Shopping
Eat something before you go food shopping. This way you are likely to spend less and buy more healthy food.
24. Snacking
Snack from a plate, not the packet -- it is easy to feel you should finish the packet. Put what you need on a plate, and put the rest of the pack out of sight.
25. Party Time
When you go to a party, socialise away from the area where the food and drink are. That way you are likely to eat and drink less and enjoy the party more.
