Anatomy Of Cells
The cell is the basic structural and functional
unit of the body. Here's a short introduction to this fascinating and vital structure.
Proteins And The Body, Part 1
Although cells synthesise many different chemicals, a large part of the cellular machinery is devoted to producing proteins. Proteins determine the physical and chemical characteristics of cells and so are vitally important.
What Are Enzymes?
A cell could theoretically produce a large range of different chemicals. The ones that are produced are determined by the presence of enzymes.
What Are Neuropeptides?
Neurotransmitters consisting of 3-40 amino acids are known as neuropeptides. They are widespread in the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.
What Are Prostaglandins? Prostaglandins were first discovered in 1935 in seminal fluid and assumed to be produced in the prostate, hence the name. About 30 prostaglandins have been identified and they are divided up into three groups.
Non-Specific Immune Response
It is very easy to believe that antibodies do all the work fighting invaders, but there is a more general non-specific defence system too.
